About Hatherop Road Allotments
Hatherop Allotments were originally part of Hatherop Park, with our entrance gate also serving as a park entrance. The first allotments were created in the 1800s when the railway line was built — 12 plots along the linewhere railway workers could grow their own food. In 1990, Michael Wren, Brian Woodriff and six other plotholders set up the association. It became a semi-devolved site, and it was agreed that the association would be called ‘The Markhole Allotment Association’ — a name that was then registered with the council.
Where does Markhole come from?
The name was drawn from local history. A signal box on the railway line beside the allotments was called the Markhole signal box, and Markhole is also the name of a boundary marker between Hampton and Hanworth. Several local roads are named after Markhole too.
