Allotment Committee Report
August 1, 2026
The most significant (startling!) matter discussed was Mike Wren’s sudden announcement that, after 36 years on the committee, he needed to step away and focus on other matters that presently require his attention. Mike did not formally retire at the meeting, and the timing and arrangements for his eventual departure remain to be confirmed.

Over four decades, he has been a constant and highly visible presence and is widely regarded as the face of Hatherop Allotments. He has never missed an Association AGM since being part of the inaugural committee (36 years ago) and currently holds the unofficial title of plot holder who has been here the longest (since 1977!).
Mike has unsurpassed knowledge of all things gardening / allotment and is always only too happy to share this information. As such Mike has always been the first to put up his hand to help with any project and we are very pleased to report that Mike is not leaving the allotment and will remain on as a plot holder and trusted colleague and friend to all. Mike was formally made President of the Association in 2024 and will continue in this role. Chris McKay expressed thanks for his exceptional commitment, hard work and contribution over many years.
In other matters, the Committee also reviewed the recent Summer Social, and discussed ways to improve future events, including attracting more visitors, recruiting volunteers and organising a separate team for dismantling and clearing up, post Social.
Other matters included progress on the community garden pergola and new website, vacant plots and council inspections, improved payment and banking arrangements, security lighting and cameras, bird-box and green-manure projects, equipment costs, working parties, and possible changes to meeting times to encourage wider participation.
Other proposed changes are installing a revamped notice board (one that can actually be read!) and improving signage on the site. The challenge of creating an optimal ‘climate’ that would encourage plot holders to pay the subs at 17p per week to join the association (£10.00 year!) is a standing agenda item. (We are happy to accept the 17p per week if you cannot pay the £10.00 in a lump sum).
The next meeting will be held on Saturday 5 September at 10am. Please forward any items for the Committee to consider to: allotments.markhole@gmail.com.
